Maddox ate a lot of black olives yesterday, which resulted in a blockage of his feeding tube from 4:00am until 6:30am. I won't go into the gory details, but the on-call IV nurse thought we were going to have to replace the tube. Thank you God that we did not. We had a similar blockage earlier in the week, but that lasted only 45 minutes. oy, I can't wait until we are done with this.
Of course Maddox was wide awake and all chipper. He is amazingly happy when he wakes up in the middle of the night. He was making a control panel with tape and a remote control. While I was talking to the IV nurse he kept insisting I tell her about the control panel. Then he was up for the day around 7:30.
I had told Maddox we would look through Mason's telescope once it was dark out. Maddox woke up at 11:00pm, came downstairs and asked about the telescope. Then he was up at midnight again.
He is doing well though. He has gained 3 pounds now. He is over 30 pounds! I never thought I would see him over 30 pounds. He is gaining a pound a week and it is easy to see the weight on him. He is getting almost husky looking. My little peanut is getting big. He used to look like a 2 year old or even an 18 month old to me, and now, he is looking closer to 4. It's almost weird seeing him gain weight so fast. My baby isn't a baby anymore.
I don't know what the goal is for Maddox, I am hoping to find out on Monday. But if he continues gaining a pound a week, he'll be 12 pounds heavier by the time we are done. That would put him at 39 pounds.

Love & Miracles
Today Dom and Krystle were married. It was a perfect, beautiful ceremony on the lake and the day was gorgeous. Krystle looked absolutely amazing and was a beautiful and stunning bride, and Dom looked incredible as well. They looked so happy and I wish for them decades of happiness, joy, and love.
If I would have remembered the camera adapter, I could have put some pics on here. Tomorrow.
The weekend has been amazing and Maddox has done well. I'll do a long post tomorrow, but I'll blog about the miracle.
Today, about 10 minutes before we had to leave for pictures, Maddox was playing with my car keys. All of a sudden I heard a "pop" and the radio stopped playing. I assumed Maddox was playing around with the radio when I heard Craig say, "Maddox!! Are you OK?! What did you do?!". Then I heard Maddox whimpering. I ran over to him, he was looking at his hand and whimpering, and two of my car keys were sticking out of the wall outlet, and Maddox's hand was black. He said "Momma, a big fire came out of the wall and went over my head, but it didn't hurt me". I washed the black off both sides of his hand and he didn't have a mark on it. We couldn't believe it. Maddox kept saying "it didn't hurt me Momma, it didn't even hurt". Then he made the comment "momma! I can get bad guys! If a bad guy is behind me, I can put the keys in the wall and the fire will go over my head and get the bad guys". Our room was all shorted out and Craig knocked the keys out with a shoe. I still get freaked out thinking about it. It is seriously a miracle he didn't get hurt, or worse. God definitely had His hand on Maddox today. Maddox was wearing his battery powered pump at the time and has all that liquid on and in him, but he was OK. I checked the soles of his feet and every where else. But he was fine. Then we went for pictures.
Maddox told my cousins he could get bad guys with the fire, and my cousin Randy told him to give the keys to the bad guys and have them out the keys in the wall. Thank you Randy!! Brilliant idea!
Tonight Maddox told me he could put his metal handcuff keys in the wall because they are smaller. I finally told him if he did it would hurt like when the tube went in his nose, for many days. He asked if there would be stinging stuff and I told him there would be stinging stuff everywhere fir kits and lots of days. He didn't have much to say about that. I feel bad scaring him, but he may not be that fortunate again. I still can't think about it without almost crying.
He also fell out of bed this morning and hit his head on the bottom of the night stand. All night I had kept him safe in bed and kept pulling him back to the middle, but at 8:00 this morning I must have been in a deep sleep because in was awakened by the sound of a thud. This boy had a rough morning.
I need to get some shut eye. Even though our morning was eventful, the day was incredible and I was able to see my baby brother get married to the woman he loves. I am so lucky to have a sister-in-law like Krystle!

I Forgot....
....to mention Maddox gained 2 pounds in 2 weeks! 2 stinkin' pounds!! At this rate, he'll gain 12 pounds in 3 months. He'll be huge! And we increased the rate on his feeding pump, so now he's hooked up for 22 hours instead of 24. We are going to increase his mL per hour by 5 every 3 days, and even faster than that if he tolerates it well. It will be so nice when he's only on it for 15 hours a day. I was also given the OK to cancel his appt with the urologist until we are done with the feeding tube. That's a relief.

Rehearsal & Dinner
We had the rehearsal for Dom and Krystle's wedding tonight. Maddox gets ton use a bubble gun along with a little girl. Is he pumped about that! I gave explicit instructions about not shooting people with the gun. During rehearsal, somehow Maddox ended up walking next to Krystle's Dad and he was aiming the gun at him with a huge smirk on hid face, because Krystle's Dad didn't notice. There could be trouble at the wedding.
Maddox is excited to be in the wedding and to wear his "wedding clothes". He did great today, even though he didn't take a nap (lil' stinker). He is not self-conscious with the tube or backpack. Man did he run around tonight. The rehearsal was on the beach and the dinner was a BBQ, so he had room to run, and run he did. It's fun watching him with more energy (and exhausting ;) ). He can keep up with Mason better now, which means everything to him.
Mason is excited to wear his dress shirt and pants and possibly tie (if it's not too uncomfortable). He will be passing out programs with his cousin Nanni. I noticed today that Mason's pants were high waters. He just keeps growing. He's thin though, so the next size up is usually too wide. He may have to wear knickers this winter ;). He started his Hartley Nature Homeschool program this morning and loved it, but he always loves Hartley.
I changed Maddox's tape on his nose AND cheek in 20 minutes today. That is a record. The nurse tried this morning, but he was too upset, so I said I would do it. I can't bear traumatizing him anymore. He was just shaking and crying. Then his tube came out pretty far and it was traumatic for him when I pushed it back in. He's such a brave boy though.
Holy cow, packing for a two night trip is insane. I know I over did the packing, but I was afraid I would run out of something, or there would be a tape or tube emergency, so I. packed. everything. I think I packed for three days. We could probably stay week.
Well, I'm off to bed. I forgot to pack the camera accessory for my iPad, so I can't put any pictures on. Tomorrow my baby brother is getting married!! Its gonna be a great day!

Like a Newborn
It feels like I have a newborn again. The four hour feeds, being up a lot at night and sleeping in the same room as Maddox brings back all those newborn memories. I even have a hard time leaving the house without him. The neat part is that when he was a newborn, he was so miserable and I was so tired and had postpartum depression for 6 months before realizing it, that I didn't really enjoy those newborn moments a's much as I wanted to. But now, Maddox isn't that miserable, the depression is being treated, and I am not nearly as exhausted. It's like I've been given a second chance to have those moments, if that makes sense. So, in a way it is a gift, and I am thankful for this bonding period with Maddox. Believe me, we are bonding more.
We had a different home care nurse again today and I hope she can remain our permanent one. Our regular one has been out with an emergency so we have been seeing different ones. I love our regular home care nurse. She is fantastic! And so is the one we saw today. But I "clicked" with the nurse we saw today. You know how you can just "click" with someone? I don't know if she felt that way, but I did. I have no complaints with our regular nurse, I really don't. She is great with Maddox and has been very helpful. I don't know what it is. This nurse mentioned that Maddox may be put on her caseload, so we'll see. Either way, I am happy.
The nurse said that Maddox is feeling the tube moving in his nose when he chews, that's why it feels like his nose is getting bigger. She also said it's normal for him to not want to sleep alone.
I learned about the different types of syringes today. I never knew there was a difference between them. I recently read that if a person learns about new things often, it can help prevent Alzheimers, or at least delay the onset. Well, I am learning a lot, so I guess I am helping fight against that disease. And I am not joking about Alzheimers. Watching Craig's Mom go through that and taking care of her has taught me the seriousness of that wretched disease.
I was able to see my brother Derek today. It's always so nice when the whole family is together. The boys loved seeing their "Uncle Terry". We all got together at my parents' house to put together the party favors for the wedding. What a blast! And man, my Mom put a ton of work into these favors and had everything so well organized, the favors were finished very quickly. Kudos to Mom! And she made sure nothing was done 2nd rate.
Last night I almost threw up when I saw Maddox sleeping with the feeding tube. Some days this is all so overwhelming and frightening, even though everything is going exceptionally well. Today was one of those days where I had to remind myself to "just breathe". I will be so glad when this is all done. I was praying today that our days would be full so the time would pass quickly. Tomorrow will be 2 weeks since we came home from the hospital. Sometimes it feels like a few days ago, and other times it feels like an eternity ago.
I am getting used to the stares of others when we are out and about. It's hard to see the double takes, but it's to be expected. As I read on another blog "he has a tube coming out of his nose for heaven's sakes". People usually start smiling though because Maddox is being himself; dancing, humming, role playing, jabbering, and on occasion, screaming. Oh the screaming. It isn't as often as it used to be, but good grief is it loud. And he could care less where he is when he feels it is necessary to express his frustration with me. Talk about lessons in not caring what other people think. But one of these days I am going to say "just wait until I tell your mom how you were screaming" ;).
Time to refill his bag. Only 2 more days until my brother's wedding!!

Tantrums, Tubing, Freedom, and Growing Noses
Well, Mr. Maddox threw a full blown, laying on the floor, kicking, flailing, thrashing, etc... Trying to pick him up with the pack and tubing without getting hung up on the tubing was a bit tricky. He had a harder day. Not awful, but just easily frustrated. He was especially frustrated with his pack and having to carry it with him wherever he went. This nice weather has been beautiful, but he just sweats under it and the he itches. The cooled weather will be nice for him.
Mason's appt went well, and the hearing in his repaired ear is almost normal! It has improved significantly, and should improve more as the swelling goes down. Mason also got the OK to get his ear wet. He can go under water and doesn't need an earplug anymore. He is pretty psyched.
One of the things Maddox keeps saying is that it feels like his nose is getting bigger when he eats. One night he coughed which eating and started crying "my nose is getting bigger!! It's getting too big!". I have no idea what's going on when he says that. Tomorrow I'll give the nurse a call.
Maddox is however, falling asleep without anyone else in the room. He still needs one of us to sleep in his room, but at least he can fall asleep on his own.

Too lazy to title this
We headed out to the beach again this evening. What an amazing day and night. Mason is convinced that summer is going to last a long time because winter lasted so long. Ahh, the naïveté of youth. I haven't had the heart to tell him the truth. He'll find out soon enough.

The water was a lot colder today, so the boys did a lot of running in and out of the water.
Look at that beautiful taping job on Maddox's nose. I take full credit for that job. ;) he finally doesn't look like he was badly wounded.
You can sort of see the green stripes on his face here because I didn't get all the protective covering off. Those strips will need to be replaced soon, because they are already starting to come off. But look at his nose!
On the way home from the beach Maddox asked "Can I have something to eat?". Holy cow. That is not something we hear often, especially since he started the feeding tube. After eating fruit snacks, he asked if he could eat something else. I almost fell over. He ate 162 calories just on the way home. Today he ate a total of 378 calories. Mostly garbage calories, but calories nonetheless. Once he isn't on the feeding tube for 24 hours, we'll start focusing on healthy eating. Today he ate a total of 378 calories.
One of the nice things about the feeding tube, is that I don't have to pack a whole refrigerator whenever we go anywhere. And I'm not stressing so much about what he eats and how much he eats. Yes, I'm counting every calorie, but I know he is getting adequate nutrition and more calories than what he was eating.
Starting tomorrow we have a very busy week. Tomorrow Mason has his follow up from his eardrum patch. That includes a hearing test. I am excited to see how his hearing has improved. However, I will be entertaining Maddox for about 2 hours. My brother Derek is coming home from California for my brother Dominic's wedding. So excited to see him!
Wed morning is Maddox's first check up since receiving the feeding tube. I'm excited to see what the doctor's scale says. I am going to ask if we can cancel the urology appt until we are done with the feeding tube. On Wed we will also start increasing how much formula he gets an hour to start transitioning him to the 15 hour feed, instead of 24 hours. I'm very excited about that! We afternoon, the boys are getting their haircut
Thursday morning Mason starts his homeschool class at Hartley and Thursday afternoon we head up the shore for Dominic's wedding rehearsal.
And we'll fit 1-2 nurse visits in as well.

Beach Bums
I took the boys to the beach on this incredible morning! I cannot believe it was warm enough to swim in the lake at the end of the 2nd week of September.
I wrapped up Maddox's feeding pump and the connector with baggies and tape, but we went sans walmart bag. I do have a little pride ;)
I just held his backpack and ran the tubing out if he wanted to get really wet. I'm sure it looked weird to others, but he didn't care and he had a blast.
He kinda looks like one of those old time scuba divers. All he needs is a helmet.
I cannot believe how looooong Mason is getting. The boy doesn't stop growing.
Maddox actually walked the entire way from the van to the lake. Usually I have to carry him. And he walked all the way back. When I asked him if he wanted me to carry him, he said "NO!!!". Music to my ears. He has so much more stamina and endurance now. He doesn't ask to be carried up the stairs anymore either. And I haven't heard "I'm too tired Momma" once since he started the feeding tube.
I also noticed his thighs look a little chunky and he isn't so skinny around his hands or ankles. He loves to hear " there's more of you to squish now!"
The scale said 29.0 yesterday evening and today. That means he has gained about a pound a half since August 31. He loooooves stepping on that scale. I only hope it doesn't cause him to become overly worried about his weight when he is older.
I changed Maddox's tape on his cheek tonight. His poor cheek had tiny yellow blisters and is bright red. It looks horrible, but he says it doesn't hurt. It took 45 minutes to remove it, but there was no screaming. Hopefully I'll get quicker at this.
The carnage from retaping him. I used some new tape that is a 2 step process. But apparently I didn't get all of the non-stick protective covering off, so he has some attractive green stripes on his cheek. sigh. One of these days.....

Jerry rigging and fun
So, Maddox is Not sleeping through the night. The alarm on his pump wakes him up now. sigh. He is still too scared to sleep alone, so Craig and I are taking turns sleeping on an air mattress in his room. double sigh. When Maddox is awake in the middle of the night, he is often turning his lantern on, looking in a little mirror and combing his hair, or rearranging the stuff he's sleeping with. triple sigh. He'll also shine his lantern on the air mattress to make sure someone is sleeping there.
Hopefully this will get better soon.
I did notice his thighs were looking a wee bit chubby tonight. And the scale read 29.0 tonight. Yay! And he ate some steak and pork chops tonight. Which is significant because he has avoided hard to chew foods since he got the feeding tube. He still hasn't eaten close to 300 calories in the last couple days though. I am hoping that will improve once he on the feeding tube for 15 hours rather than 24.
Climbing trees at Hartley. I love the Hartley Nature Center, as do the boys.
We went to Lester Park yesterday and had a blast. Maddox does not let the feeding tube slow him down.
This taping job was done by the nurse. I'm thinking I may not suck as much as I thought with the taping.

This warm weather has been incredible. It's a little hard for Maddox because he gets sweaty under his pack and itches. But we are enjoying the sun!

With all this weather, we had to find a way for Maddox to get wet.
Mason helped me figure out how to rig up Maddox's pack. We wrapped up his feeding pump in a large baggie and taped it all up. Then we wrapped his pack in a walmart bag (classy I know) and wrapped his connectors in a snack baggie and taped the crud out of it. And it worked! And Maddox, bless his heart, didn't care. He was too excited to run in the sprinkler. Tomorrow I may try the beach.

All of Maddox's equipment stayed clean and dry. It may not be pretty, but it's functional.
Awwwwww, Maddox fell asleep in his room tonight without anyone in there and he needed his lantern on. He has 2 night lights and a lamp in the hallway on as well. I suppose the dark seems a lot scarier when you have a tube coming out of your nose and you're hooked up to a small machine.
Mason is also demonstrating a little anxiety. Which is unusual for him.I think part of it is the age and part of it is related to Maddox's feeding tube. Thankfully he talks about anything he is worried about.
Other than a little anxiety, the boys are doing great and we are enjoying the gorgeous weather. We'll see if we hit the beach tomorrow. There is also a lot of family events going on, but I think the stomach flu is going around, so I don't know if I want to have Maddox hanging around a lot of people.

Muddy Buddies
All of Maddox's equipment stayed clean and dry. It may not be pretty, but it's functional.
Awwwwww, Maddox fell asleep in his room tonight without anyone in there and he needed his lantern on. He has 2 night lights and a lamp in the hallway on as well. I suppose the dark seems a lot scarier when you have a tube coming out of your nose and you're hooked up to a small machine.
Mason is also demonstrating a little anxiety. Which is unusual for him.I think part of it is the age and part of it is related to Maddox's feeding tube. Thankfully he talks about anything he is worried about.
Other than a little anxiety, the boys are doing great and we are enjoying the gorgeous weather. We'll see if we hit the beach tomorrow. There is also a lot of family events going on, but I think the stomach flu is going around, so I don't know if I want to have Maddox hanging around a lot of people.
